YHA Australia have three CBD properties and five in the suburbs. Some are great for families.
The Sydney Harbour YHA opened in The Rocks in 2009 and has a range of multi-share (4 and 6 bed), double/twin and family rooms. All rooms are ensuite. Families can opt either for double/twin room with roll out bed, or the dedicated family rooms which sleep up to five (double bed with single on top, and a bunk). The family rooms have TVs, whilst the doubles have tea/coffee making facilities. Beds start from $42 (standard rate) per person, $143 double room or $178 for a family room. YHA members save at least 10% off these rates. The hostel has a large roof terrace with 360 degree views of the city, Harbour Bridge and Opera House. There is a TV room, lounge, large self catering kitchen, fast internet, BBQ, and tour desk. There is also a café bar with DIY breakfast options and a small shop. Nearby parking and discounts available.
Sydney Central YHA is beside Central Station. It offers a range of multi-share, double and family rooms, many with ensuite facilities. Other facilities include a roof top indoor swimming pool and sauna, in-house cinema, TV lounges, kitchen, café and travel agency as well as all the other usual YHA facilities like fast internet. There is limited parking (paid) that needs to be booked in advance. Beds cost from $36 per person (standard rate), $118 double room with ensuite and fold out bed. Families with more than one child are usually accommodated in a 4 or 6 share room (shared bathrooms) but there are also interconnecting 4 share and double rooms, which would therefore sleep 6 with an ensuite but involves booking two rooms.
Other YHAs in Sydney are
Railway Square YHA – about 300 metres from Sydney Central, this is located on part of Central Station and includes replica railway carriages on the first platform. This has limited twin/family rooms but families can take a 4 share carriage room.
Glebe Point YHA – an older style hostel with a mix of twin and four share rooms.
Bondi Beachouse YHA – close to Bondi Beach
Sydney Beachouse YHA Collaroy – mix of rooms including family options
Cronulla Beach YHA – more of a working holiday makers hostel than a family option
Pittwater YHA – this is a bush retreat reached via ferry only from Church Point. Church Point is about 30km from the city (90 min - 2 hour bus trip). From the ferry wharf it is a 15 minute uphill walk to the hostel (so pack light!). Great family option with lots of wildlife, superb water views, bushwalking etc. Can rent the entire hostel (32 beds) under YHA’s Rent a YHA scheme.
Out of Sydney, the Blue Mountains YHA is a great hostel for families and close to all the sights and activities in the mountains.
